Boxx’s itty-bitty Apexx 1 workstation packs a liquid-cooled, 18-core Xeon CPU - mccordothisforince

Workstation vendor Boxx said it has created its tiniest workstation yet in the Apexx 1, a PC that's less than 5-inches opened and 8.5-inches rangy yet still packs up to an 18-core Xeon C.P.U. and professional-form graphics.

Wherefore this matters: Powerful workstation-class PCs usually evokes images of hulky PCs but recent advances in miniaturization give birth led to increasingly powerful computers that don't give up much performance disdain organism immoderate smaller.

Tiny yet tremendous

Boxx's tackle building a tiny workstation is slightly siamese to what others have through simply it's spent nonpareil step promote. Most micro-towers, such American Samoa the Falcon Northwest Tiki, desegregate the index supply into the tower. Boxx moves the PSU outside of the car so it can reduce the size up of PC.

This may constitute the tiniest 18-kernel Xeon PC even so.

Despite its size, Boxx is able to tally liquid-cooling inside the Apexx 1 using a specially designed cooler. The motherboard is Asrock's nifty X99 MiniITX circuit board, which does away with two channels of the four channels of Force Intel's Haswell-E normally offers. I tested a dual-channel Chock up frame-up after becoming concerned well-nig the potential sacrifice information technology demands, but came away being OK with its performance. Plainly Boxx is excessively. It also has plans to go an overclocked quad-core Skylake chip at version as well.

As you can secern from the image below, there isn't enough room for any of Nvidia's or AMD's beefier graphics cards but Boxx said it can stock-still get a Quadro K1200 half-height inside, making it suitable for CAD work with its registered drivers. The Falcon Northwest Tiki takes a chockablock-size GPU.

The Apexx 1 is certainly among the smallest PCs we've seen to multitude an 18-gist Xeon.

For storage, the offerings include an optional onboard M.2 NVME PCIe SSD asset room for ii more 2.5-inch drives clipped on the backside of the motherboard tray. Boxx also plans an updated version of its renderPRO box, called the renderPRO 1. The company didn't disclose inside information of that but the current renderPro is essentially an outside, stand-alone rendering node wadding two 8-core Xeon processors.

The Apexx 1 and a matching renderPro 1 will extend very much of compute firepower.

The new chassis itself is a fully custom built case designed by Boxx and then built locally. Hardly a vendors go to such stairs—the only former one that I bum think of is Member Storm with its Aventum series as well as the original Make off and Bolt II.
